Council provide a progress report on the assessment and implementation of public lighting projects in the Municipal District

My first question at this months (20th Nov) MD meeting; “Can the council provide a progress report on the assessment and implementation of public lighting projects in the municipal district outlining; their current status on the Kildare Lighting Infrastructure Programme, where funding is likely to come from, and how many have been submitted for consideration in budget 2020?”

Here is the report issued by: Ms E Wright, Senior Executive Officer, Roads, Transportation and Public Safety Section: A Kildare Lighting Priority Scheme (KLIPS) report was issued to all members in October 2019 detailing all new lighting installations which have been progressed in 2018/19 in the county. The report also include details of requests that are awaiting assessment and identifies requests where public lighting will not be installed. Public Lighting installations are funded directly from the Public Lighting budget, however, if members wished to provide additional funding from LPT to progress a specific project, this can be discussed and accommodated. The identified project would have to be either an upgrade of existing infrastructure or a project approved under KLIPS criteria.

Public Lighting is currently working to complete the projects funded in 2018/19 and has not assessed any projects for 2020.

Report issued by Ms E Wright, Senior Executive Officer, Roads Section : ‘Kildare County Council was unsuccessful in securing funding of €11.3million from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund for the Newbridge Southern Relief Road and Second Liffey Crossing. The proposed scheme involves the construction of a one-kilometre road, including a new bridge crossing of the River Liffey, which will link Great Connell Road and the Athgarvan Road in Newbridge. The project aims to:

  • provide the essential infrastructure to support compact, consolidated development on zoned lands in Newbridge’s southeast quadrant;
  • reduce traffic congestion in the town centre and facilitate a public realm scheme; and
  • provide high quality walking and cycling linkages between residential areas and employment hubs in Newbridge.
